Itinerary for Bike Ride Down Haleakala

Mountain Riders guests meet at our office 497 Baldwin Avenue Paia  at approx 7:30 am.

Mountain Riders Maui Express Bike Tour begins with a guided van tour from our office to the launching point of the bike ride (located at about the 6,500’ elevation).

You will then begin your self-paced tour at 6,500’ elevation, riding downhill through Haleakala Ranch where you will hop back in the van and return to 6,500 feet to enjoy the scenic switchbacks once more. The tour then continues with a driving tour through Kula to Makawao Town, where there will be a brief stop to explore the historic paniolo town. Your journey then continues coasting through sugar cane fields and concluding in the beachside town of Paia. 

Mountain Riders will provide transportation to the Haleakala National Park entrance from our base yard along with the use of Workmen’s Volcano Chrome Cruiser bikes and Full Face Helmets.

The minimum biking age is 15 …due to high elevation, no pregnant women are allowed on this tour, either as a biker or van rider. Maximum weight approx. 280lbs. Minimum height 5′.

Are there any restrictions for riders?

Absolutely. While we want everyone to enjoy the adventure, for safety reasons we have certain restrictions in place. They are listed below.

  • Must be a competent, experienced, and confident bike rider. You should be able to get on and off the bike safely, keep it under complete control at all times, and be able to maneuver the bike through 180-degree turns, as well as at speeds of 18-25mph.
  • A minimum of 15 years of age. Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. 
  • Must not be pregnant. 
  • The maximum weight is 280lbs due to bike manufacturer capacity. 
  • A minimum of 5′ tall. 
  • Closed-toed shoes only. No exceptions. 
  • Capable of engaging in activity at higher elevations. 
  • Not currently taking medication that may cause drowsiness or fatigue. 
  • Must sign, understand, and acknowledge all risks involved in this tour.

How dangerous is the Haleakala self-guided bike tour?

As with any type of adventure sport, there is going to be some danger and risk involved. After all, you will be riding your bike downhill – and a lot can happen if you aren’t careful. However, if you are a seasoned bike rider who is comfortable riding at a fast, downhill pace alongside automobiles, then you should be just fine. 

When trying to determine if this is the right adventure for your Hawaiian getaway, consider how well you would handle the following: 

  • Sharing the roadway with cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles
  • Traveling downhill at an average gradient of 5-6%
  • Roads with switchbacks and winding curves
  • Some stretches of the road with no bike lane or shoulder

Should I do a guided or self-guided bike tour?

At Mountain Riders, we offer all types of tours to meet the needs of our adventurers. Guided tours are more structured and have our van with you along the way. Those who are more interested in taking their time and would rather avoid a group setting may be best suited with a self-guided tour. 

Our van will drop you off at the entrance to the park and then you are on your own to pedal to the bottom of the mountain. Stop as you’d like, take in the scenery – it is a breathtaking experience.

Do I need my own bike? What should I bring?

For your Haleakala self-guided bike tour, Mountain Riders will provide you a Workmen’s Volcano Chrome Cruiser bike to use, as well as a full-face helmet. Therefore, you just need to bring your sunglasses, sunscreen, snack, water, or anything you think you may need. Remember, whatever you bring, you will have to carry with you – and you need to be able to properly handle your bike.
