Bicycling is a popular mode of travel all around the world. It’s easy to do and requires little more than balance and a well-built bicycle. Yet one of the best benefits of biking, besides getting to places faster than walking, is that it is good for you.

Riding a bike can definitely burn calories. This is great if you are looking to lose weight. Even a 195-lb. person riding a bike at a very slow rate of 12 mph can burn 531 calories per hour. Step up to the 20 mph racing speed and the calories burned per hour more than doubles to 1,416. Take your biking off-road on a mountain bike and you will burn 753 miles per hour. One of the other reasons why bicycling is a good exercise is that your body has several moving parts when you ride. Your legs are in motion as long as you pedal, and your arms are in motion every time you turn. They also burn calories from your muscles tensing up in order to keep your balance. If you bike up hills, your glute muscles do more work. As you challenge these various body parts, your heart rate increases with each pedal stroke.

Depending on your biking posture, you can focus strengthening certain body parts. Standing up as you pedal can put pressure on your lower legs, while leaning back a little bit can focus on the glutes. By keeping your hands closer to the middle of the handlebars and leaning forward, you can put weight pressure on your forearms.

Caution must be exercised, however, for people with certain conditions. For example, biking may not be good for you if you are in the early stages of recovering from any knee problems. If you have constantly sore feet, pedaling may seem uncomfortable. There is a general risk of injury as well, especially if you have inner-ear balance issues or if you decide to bicycle in heavy traffic or off road. However, the general risks are easily mitigated when you learn the traffic rules for bikers. Some states, like California, even have designated bicycle lanes in order to reduce traffic accidents and to promote an emissions-free way of travel. If done safely and with proper preparation, biking can be a fun, healthy way to stay in shape.

The Maui Hawaii Bike Tours atop Haleakala is a once in a lifetime experience for many of Maui’s visitors. Although most people do the ride only once it is an experience that remains with you forever.

Going to Hawaii for a Maui bike tour most people expect the weather to be warm and comfortable, but atop a 10,023 foot volcano it is anything but warm.

Temperatures frequently reach the low 40′s to high 30′s. Visitors are quickly made aware that on a Maui bike tours they are no longer in Kansas or at the Grand Wailea etc…

Although the tour at the summit of Haleakala National Park can be brisk. The temperatures quickly rebound into the 60′s 70′s and finally back to Maui sea level and the balmy 80-90 degree weather we are used too.

The whole Maui Bike Tour takes about 7-9 hours including free round trip transportation to and from your hotel.

Come enjoy your Maui bike tour experience with Mountain Riders

A guided tour of a 10,023 dormant volcano followed by a 28 mile bike ride down the slopes of Mt Haleakala, Incredible!

Well we could not agree more!!

21 years ago my now wife, then girlfriend Kelley and I came to Maui Hawaii for a vacation.

We experienced every Maui activity that was available at the time.

We tried Helicopters of Hana and Haleakala, Boat trips to Molokini and Lanai, Hawaiian Luaus, Kayaking tour of Makena, but our favorite by far was the Maui Bike Ride.

The rest is history!

13 months later I sold my business in Calif sold and we were on our way. Of course there were a few glitches and bumps and bruises along the way.

Today as the largest Maui Bike Ride outfitter we are happy to provide the safest guided and unguided tours on the island.

Come join us today!!

Sure. As long as you stay on the paved roads and parkingl ots. Bikes are not allowed on any park trails.
Where are the Seven Sacred Pools?
This is difficult to answer because they don’t exist – and never have. Some old guidebooks and misinformed tour guides may reference this place name.

History

The following is a brief introduction to the Maui Haleakala Volcano Tours.

Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā (“house of the sun”) to the general mountain. Haleakalā is also the name of a peak on the south western edge of Kaupō Gap. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to the legend, Māui’s grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day.

The tallest peak of Haleakalā, at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones.

According to the United States Geological Survey USGS Volcano Warning Scheme for the United States the Volcanic-Alert Level as of June 2011 was “Normal”[1] A Normal status is used to designate typical volcanic activity in a non-eruptive phase. Haleakala has produced numerous eruptions in the last 30,000 years, including in the last 500 years. This volcanic activity has been along two rift zones, the southwest and east. These two rift zones together form an arc that extends from La Perouse Bay on the southwest, through the Haleakalā Crater and to Hāna, to the east. The east rift zone continues under the ocean beyond the east coast of Maui as Haleakalā Ridge, making the combined rift zones one of the longest in the Hawaiian Islands chain.

Until recently, East Maui Volcano was thought to have last erupted around 1790, based largely on comparisons of maps made during the voyages of La Perouse and George Vancouver. Recent advanced dating tests, however, have shown that the last eruption was more likely to have been in the 17th century.[2] These last flows from the southwest rift zone of Haleakalā make up the large lava deposits of the Ahihi Kina`u/La Perouse Bay area of South Maui. In addition, contrary to popular belief, Haleakalā “crater” is not volcanic in origin, nor can it accurately be called a caldera (which is formed through when the summit of a volcano collapses to form a depression). Rather, scientists believe that Haleakalā’s “crater” was formed when the headwalls of two large erosional valleys merged at the summit of the volcano. These valleys formed the two large gaps — Koʻolau on the north side and Kaupō on the south.

Lava Flow Hazard Zones

Unlike Hawaii Island, where the USGS mapped the island into 1 of 9 Lava Flow Hazard Zones, there appears to have been little attempt to differentiate risks for different areas of Maui. However, it would follow based upon the pattern set on Hawaii Island that areas of greatest risk would be at the summit and along the rift zones. Areas of second greatest risk would be immediately downhill from summit and rift zones. Areas of third greatest risk would be protected by some current geological feature such as a hill or valley.

Surrounding and including the crater is Haleakalā National Park, a 30,183-acre (122.15 km2) park, of which 24,719 acres (100.03 km2) are wilderness.[4] The park includes the summit depression, Kipahulu Valley on the southeast, and ʻOheʻo Gulch (and pools), extending to the shoreline in the Kipahulu area. From the summit, there are two main trails leading into Haleakalā: Sliding Sands Trail and Halemauʻu Trail.

The temperature near the summit tends to vary between about 40°F (5°C) and 60°F (16°C) and, especially given the thin air and the possibility of dehydration at that elevation, the walking trails can be more challenging than one might expect. Despite this, Haleakalā is popular with tourists and locals alike, who often venture to its summit, or to the visitor center just below the summit, to view the sunrise. There is no lodging, food, or gas available in the park.[5]

Because of the remarkable clarity, dryness, and stillness of the air, and its elevation (with atmospheric pressure of 71 kPa/533 mm Hg[6]), as well as the absence of the lights of major cities, the summit of Haleakalā (like Mauna Kea) is one of the most sought-after locations in the world for ground-based telescopes. As a result of the geographic importance of this observational platform, experts come from all over the world to take part in research at “Science City“, an astrophysical complex operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, University of Hawaii, Smithsonian Institution, Air Force, Federal Aviation Agency, and others.

Some of the telescopes operated by the US Department of Defense are involved in researching man-made (e.g. spacecraft, monitoring satellites, rockets, and laser technology) rather than celestial objects. The program is in collaboration with defense contractors in the Maui Research and Technology Park in Kihei. The astronomers on Haleakalā are concerned about increasing light pollution as Maui’s population grows. Nevertheless, new telescopes are added, such as the Pan-STARRS in 2006.[7][8]

Local animals, including cattle, are often encountered in the roadway. . Cycling and horseback riding are other popular ways to explore the park.

The Island does have a unique tour via bike. We here at Mountain Riders LLC on Maui, Hawaii will pick people up at their hotels, take them to the top of Haleakalā and outfit them with a bicycle to glide down the road from just outside the National Park boundary (starting at 6500 ft altitude).

Summertime on Maui is occurring amongst the gentle slopes of Haleakala once again. People from all places and of all ages are descending “literally” upon as they bike down Maui volcano

While I am the first to agree that there are a number of incredible places to ride a bike on this great planet (Italy, Vietnam, Canadian, Thailand, Rockies Etc..).
However, how many take the opportunity to descend the worlds largest dormant volcano on a bike? Bike down a Maui volcano you say? To boot most of the ride is exactly what it says downhill.

This of course is not to mention the fact that this incredible ride occurs on the most beautiful island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. The islands of Hawaii and Maui in particular have a tremendous number of different activities for you and the family to participate in. So whether you go whalewatching, snorkeling, to a luau or on a Maui bike down a volcano tour down the slopes of Haleakala.

Please give us a call at 800 706-7700 and let us show you why we at Mountain Riders are the number #1 choice for Maui visitors.

Maui Bike Tours

If you have not ridden on the Haleakala bike tour in Maui Hawaii. You are missing a favorite Maui activity and the journey of a lifetime. The downhill Maui bike tour industry began in the early 1980′s by Bob Kiger, owner at Cruiser Bobs downhill tours. We thought we would include a little history of how the Maui bike Tours business came about for your enjoyment.

In 1982 Bob Kiger, now known as Cruiser Bob, interrupted his career as a Hollywood TV producer/director and moved to Maui to rent bicycles. He made this decision because, during an earlier Maui vacation, he could not find a decent bike to rent and because it was getting harder and harder to make a decent living in Tinseltown.

After beginning Cruiser Bob’s Rent-A-Bike he discovered some reasons why bike rentals were not popular on Maui. The roads were too narrow. Maui motorists were actually hostile to bicyclists and there were no bike paths. Bob’s fledgling business was in jeopardy because, in 1982, there was no safe way to ride a bike around his island paradise of Maui.

In spite of his isolation with only a bicycle in Lahaina, there were several views that Cruiser Bob recollects that prompted his vision of a grand bicycle tour. One early canoe ride out into the channel between Molokai and Lanai offered tatntalizing views of Haleakala. Kiger had heard through the “coconut wireless” that there was a road all the way from summit to sea level that could be bicycled. On one occasion he rode through the cane fields along the coast to Olowalu where, in the distance, he could see the giant dormant volcano.

Bob thought to himself, “what if bicycles could be to Haleakala, as skis are to Aspen?” With that simple connection, which he recorded in his 1992 journal, he formulated a business plan for Cruiser Bob’s Haleakala Downhill, a bicycle tour that would transport Maui visitors to the 10,000′ summit of Haleakala. From the top they would begin their downhill bide ride over a circuitous 38 mile course down the steepest highway on Earth. He told Tom Horton, a journalist friend, about his idea and it was published in Aloha Airlines magazine. The Maui bike tour business was born.

Bob turned 37 years old on January 3, 1983. He gave himself a special gift by hitching a ride with friends to the top of the volcano. During this first ride he tape recorded his comments while descending on the bike. “When I played back the tape”, said Bob, “I sounded like a man who had seen God.” He realized, at that point, that if the experience made him feel that good, it would also appeal to the rest of the baby boomers. Between January and April Bob took friends to the mountain to test out the road and the bicycles.

Finally on April 15, 1983 the first Maui bike tour trip was chartered by the Lawry’s Seasoning Company. They declared Cruiser Bob’s Downhill to be the highlight of their trip to Maui. From that point the business took off faster than a bike speeding down the volcano. A capital partner was brought in to pay for a van, trailer and some additional bicycles. Over the years Cruiser Bob’s has been featured in dozens of TV shows including Ted Turner’s Portrait of America, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning Australia, PM Magazine, MTV’s The Real World, The Regis and Kathy Lee Show and many European and Asian shows. Magazines as diverse as Better Homes & Gardens, Playboy, Endless Vacation, Bicycling, Modern Maturity and hundreds of others have extolled the virtues of Cruiser Bob’s trip. Indeed it has been the gateway through which hundreds of thousands of people have rediscovered the bicycle.

Although Bob Kiger is no longer involved in the downhill bike industry. We at Mountain Riders have been provided this unique visitor experience to over 600,000 people since 1991. If you are coming to Maui don’t miss the Maui bike tours. Give us a call at 808 706-7700.

The phrase Maui Nō Ka ʻOi means “Maui is unparalleled” in the Hawaiian language.

When in Maui Hawaii you will truly experience the meaning of the words, “Maui Nō Ka ʻOi” which means Maui is the Best. And rightly so, you will find Maui Hawaii the best holiday destination you have been to. It offers the great versatility of nature in the form of large beaches, majestic mountain ranges, lush rain forests, and its superior marine life which include the humpback whales in the waters. If I call it the best part of Hawaii the natives and the visitors both will agree with me beyond doubt.

Lahaina is a world famous town located in West Maui. Lahaina in the Hawaiian language means the “cruel sun”. When in this part of the world, always remember that you are quite close to the equator which makes the sun rays more powerful. So when going to take a sunbath always take proper precautions so that you won’t get sunburns. After all who would like to get the sunburns on the start of holidays?

Maui with all its natural treasures is a wonderful tourist destination. You can find this place changing colors with everyday of your stay. So much so that you will find time falling short to fully experience this place. You can start with relaxing on the warm beaches getting sunbath in the morning and then jumping into the waters to get a glimpse of its marine life. The very second day you can plan for trekking and camping in its lush green valleys. And when you do all sort of activities, bike down Haleakala in the day time Maui soothes you in the evening with the cool breeze and an interesting nightlife. Maui is full of events all the time. You will have to work overtime to keep up with the unlimited fun taking palace in Maui.

Reaching Maui is not a problem as it is conveniently connected with the Kahului Airport which is the main airport for the islands of Maui. Getting around in Maui besides its lack of public transportation systems is never a problem as you can find car rentals everywhere. Another advantage in going in for car rentals is that you will find it cheaper than any other place in the US. Same is the case with the hotels as you can find a hotel for every budget. So if you are running on a tight budget be assured that you will find a budget hotel in Maui. The only important part for you is to make prior reservations for your bike tour, luau etc.. as Maui is always packed with tourists. Some of the regular facilities offered by the hotels in Maui include air conditioned rooms, car rentals, airport pick and drop facilities, swimming pools, health clubs, spas, restaurants etc.

The best part of Hawaii is always ready to embrace you into its valleys so if you yet not visited Maui just pack your bags and take off to this wonderful part of the world, Maui No Ka Oi

Come join us on the most exhilarating Maui activities while enjoying the beauty of the island and embracing our island weather.
